Back in Bangkok briefly 11:32AM

We've had a challenging first 4 days in Thailand and the family are still adjusting, but we're hoping to get some thoughts from everyone here soon.

We're briefly in Bangkok again after a busy few days. We travelled south to Chumphon, 6 hours by train, on Monday morning and then back to Bangkok, a 7 hour train ride, yesterday afternoon. In between we visited the organic forest farm that I briefly talked about before, and spent time at Chumphon Cabana talking to Khun Varasorn about his work and vision, interviewing him, filming, and visiting a local organic rice farmer.

As an aside the term Khun is used when you are referring to people in a respectful way.

I can't say enough about Khun Varasorn and his work. His working philosophy is "our loss is our gain". For the last ten years he has worked together with local farmers towards developing a truly sustainable future for Chumphon Province.

At Chumphon Cabana resort they "walk the talk", by developing a positive working and learning environment for their staff and farmers who come there for workshops. It is also their hope that tourists who come to visit will gain from this. Their educational approach is truly hands on with a Play and Learn (PLEARN) garden and facilities for educating farmers. Their work with the whole community is so successful that Khun Varasorn is often busy travelling to other parts of Thailand to share their story.

When we talked about climate change I was informed that there is little information available at a grassroots level in Thailand. There is clearly a need for this to happen and for connections to be made between climate change and the good things that are happening on the ground.

In our short time at Chumphon Cabana I learnt about actions that are happening that in a science or policy context we would categorise as adaptation and mitigation responses. As I've already said, they are already acting for a sustainable future.

Making the climate change connection, which I have done in a small way with Khun Varasorn, will further strengthen such positive initiatives.
